General news

Post by 101reykjavik »

Thought I would start a thread for any news snippets that pop up…

Dave says at To The End premier about the band’s future:

• there is nothing in the diary, but then there never is until something happens
• he would do something again
• it doesn’t feel like an ending to him and Damon likes teasing us all, but he doesn’t know. Could be the end, could not.

Damon awarded honorary degree by University of Exeter. He called it ‘somewhat of an elevation’ as the last time he went to the city was to get his driving theory test certificate.

Interesting sounding orchestral interpretation of Blur and Gorillaz songs a couple of night's ago, in Melbourne. I'm intrigued. I wonder how it was.

Country House was released on this day, 29 YEARS AGO.

One funny memory of the time. I was in Tower Records (or was it Sam Goody at that point, it changed hands a bit...?) in Weston-super-Mare with my dad, I forget the exact reason, I think we may have been looking for a classical CD for my mum. Country House was playing inside as we wandered around, this would have been at the time of its release or soon after. When it got to the 'blow, blow me out' a cappella bit, I clearly remember my dad turning to me and saying something like: 'What is this awful noise?' Stayed with me that one.

My kids like it. :D Terrible? Dunno, maybe. I never again wish to hear it live, but then if they don't play another gig, I guess I'll get my wish!

Maybe they should have trusted Graham's instincts at the time and gone with Stereotypes as the single... ancient history now. Long since embraced.

I suppose the song itself isn't terrible -- it's everything surrounding it that it is terrible, particularly the music video. My point is rather that it cemented their status as a novelty band and made them double down on the entire Britpop lad charade, which famously aged like milk. Just an ill-advised career move, really. Fortunately it didn't take them long to do a 180!

Yeah, the circus around it was embarrassing, that’s true. The video was cringeworthy. Damon was in full show-off brat mode at that point.

And yes, went from Country House as lead off single to Beetlebum as lead single for ST. All in the space of what, 18 months-ish? That’s quite a handbrake turn…
